The Girl with the Happy Meal and the Dragon Tattoo

Last week I was lucky enough to see an early screening of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  We were given the tickets but little did I know that the radio station that gave the majority away was a local Hip-Hop powerhouse.  It made for a crowd full of attendees that were uneducated on the subject matter they were about to view on the silver screen.  I would say the ages of attendees ranged from six years old (I am not shitting you) to 85 (again not exaggerating).  Then there were those who would have been more comfortable at the next Tyler Perry riotfest of whitey hate back man dressed as an old Amazonian black woman (never seen one so just a broad stereotype).  Then there were the hipster folks who love being the center of attention.  It was just a wide spectrum of the human condition all in one room to see the feel bad movie of the holiday season.

As the screening time drew closer and we were told to leave all electronics outside, passed the security screening then the real fun began.  A promotion crew from 93BLX entered and started throwing out freebies to a select segment of the audience and as you can guess it was not the one percent that was getting the handouts.  It was like they were throwing moonpies at the MAGMA parade.  These people were going ape shit for free tee shirts, rubber bracelets, and posters.  Most went to the 93BLX listeners some items made it to the rock and roll crowd but very little.  One early twenties hipster chick made her way across the aisle and asked one of the promotion people “Who do you work for?” when his response was “93BLX” she then replied “That is what I thought”.   Some people just have no common sense I suppose.   Then there were the ladies who brought children to a movie that features sexual abuse, torture and anal rape.  Some even made it past the first instance of abuse but go figure they all streamed out as quickly as possible….go figure.

Then the Medea crowd and hip-hop lovers began commenting on the on the movie.  They seemed shocked that the lead character loved Happy Meals and that they were readily available in Sweden.  Guess they never saw Pulp Fiction…..Royale with Cheese anyone?  It just amazes me how people act at the movies and how they go into movies blind or go just because it is free, knowing it is a movie they would never watch otherwise.

The movie was great despite the crowd of idiots but it will be a while before I attend another free screening put on by an urban hip-hop station, or a country station for that matter!

And now and observation on the Holiday’s!!!!

(This is not about one specific person just an observation made over the holidays)

It is funny how two faced some can be.  How they think it is all about appearances.  How they belittle and besmirch family, and friends.  I never really understand it and never will, especially when it’s a disability that that family member has overcome or excelled despite of that uncontrollable fact of life that they live with daily that you can just simply make fun of.  So kudos to you asshat two faced people you are the real winners aren’t you?!

An I'm back kind of thing

I look back and realize I have not blogged much this year.  My only excuse would be that it would be easy to write daily about the people, places and things that piss me off or those that are wronging others.  I chose the high road this year and only really postined things of inetrest, things that make me happy, people I love, etc.  I am sure I could go back over this years eighteen post and find some negativity but off the top of my mind I cannot recall any.  The end of the year has been a busy one at work with 5010 and other aspects of Healthcare reform taking place.  It would be easy to go off on all the issues there and onec again my passion for what I do would be thought of as anger.  Othere peoples non chalat attitudes would remain the same and nothing would change.  I will have plenty to tell after retirement that is for certain.

Well I suppose this post is just a hi, here I am, Still here, I'm back kind of thing.  Nothing to see here but us happy people.  It helps I suppose that we got to spend Thanksgiving with some great people up in the Atlanta area, even if dumb ass me did kill a mailbox while there.  I can always count on myself to do something embarrassing at some point of the festivities.  My reserved nature lends itself to such things and makes me poke my head back into the shell.  Understanding people who love us made it not so bad though.

Well I leave you with a little something from my Christmas wish list.  Have a better one and come back soon as I will have more to say later!

I hate Pez but this is badass! I would rather have a Blu-ray though, already have all of these on Blu.

Kneel before Crowe!

Henry Cavill as The Man Of Steel
Yes, yes I know the quote used for my title is not used properly, but I could not resist the thought of Jor_el telling Zod where to stick it!

So when I started my blog I had no intention of taking so long between post; however when I do post I tray and make it good. Well I saw this today over at Ain’t It Cool News and I had to share. I am and always have been a huge Superman geek. Hell ask my wife and she will tell you I seriously wanted our sons middle name to be Kal-El.

When I see this trailer I still get excited!

As you should know or can see in the trailer Jor-El in the 1978 film was played by the actors actor Marlon Brando. He gave the film some credibility at the time and rightly so after watching that performance hundreds of times over the years.

As I write this Superman is being re-launched with the filming of Zack Snyder's MAN OF STEEL. In this adaption non other than Russell Crowe will play Jor-El the father of Kal-El who is being played by Henry Cavill.

Any way I thought some of you may dig the set photos of Russell Crowe playing the elder Kryptonian. I am a huge Supes Fan and Snyder has yet to disappoint me.

Brando as Jor-El
Bas Ass updateed Jor-El
Now the only question left, will Crowe buy his own island and go so far down hill before making a come back in a film with a gian lizard and a former teen star?

New Red State Trailer and Poster!!!

If you did not see Red State when Kevin Smith toured the nation with in in March and April of this year you will have you chance this Labor Day!  Kevin Smith and SModcast Pictures have announced a one week exclusive Academy Award qualifying run of RED STATE beginning Friday, August 19th at Quentin Tarantino's legendary New Beverly Cinema. Each screening of RED STATE will be followed by a live Q&A with writer - director Kevin Smith. (with the exception of the one screening just for Academy members).

At the  2011 Sundance Film Festival, Smith bought the distribution rights for $20 causing a stir in the press.  He has proven his methods work and that this is his best film thus far.

Smith decided to self distribute the film and immediately set up 15 special screenings throughout the U.S. as part of the "Red State U.S.A. Tour". The tour began at the historic Radio City Music Hall in New York on March 5th and finished one month later at the infamous Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

If you missed the tour or can not make the screenings in LA, have no worries as on September 1st, Lionsgate will debut Red State on VOD. The untraditional, direct-to-fan, touring theatrical release pioneered by SModcast Pictures during the Red State USA Tour continues this fall.

Here is the newest trailer released on 7/27/2011 as well as the haunting teaser.   Beware this is not for the kiddos.

See Red State!  It is fucking mzing ride.

Too Busy for weekly updates...again.

Happy Independence Day

Once again weekly updates have been blown out of the water.  Travel for work.  Work.  Home, and sleep have all gotten in the way.  Now we are packing up and getting ready to head to spend Independence Day weekend with family in Florida so my July movie update will be late, not that any one is interested it it but me.   Maybe I will still find time t o see Super 8 or Transformers 3 over the long weekend.

Anywho I hope you all have a fantastic Fourth of July (I know I will)!!!!!

Well this is cool and new this week and should substitute for a full weekly update.  Did you know the director Brad Bird who directed The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Ratatouille has jumped into live action in a big way?  Check out the trailer for the next Mission Impossible flick....looks pretty good!

Greetings From Washington D.C. June 12

I missed last weeks things that update but made up for it with June Movie Preview.   As I write this tonight I am in a most sleep deprived state.  Such things happen when you time travel.  Yep, I flipped on the old flux capacitor that was well hidden on the seat back of the US AIRWAYS jet I was on and boom one hour into the future I went.  Having been awake since 2:30 AM CST and it now being 9:49 PM EST I am toast. (and my wife just informed me my toothbrush is at home one hour and hundreds of miles behind me).  Shite!!!!!

A day full of plane, trains, automobiles, waiting, walking, running, picture taking fun is now coming to an end.  I have not flown since October 2001 and was amazed at how much security had tightened up since then.  I was disappointed to go without a grope, but I still have depart for home via BWI which has body scanners if not mistaken, so maybe I'll opt out!

Monday morning 9AM EST is just creeping up so I need to put my thinking cap on for my SQL Admin 2008 Course.  So I will catch up with other wildness from D.C. later.  Things such as stinky cabs, pan handlers on the metro.  Airports with Mall's in them.

Since I am in our nations Capital I leave you with some Drunk History!!!

I love you Heather!  Miss you and can not wait to be back home to you and the kids!

June 2011 Movie Go Boom Preview

As I suspected Thor and The Hangover Part II were my favorite movies of may, but I must confess they were the only Movies of May that I had the opportunity to see.  We shall still venture out to see POTC On Stranger Tides, can not pass up a pirate flick with vampire like mermaids.  Well on to June we go....
JUNE 3

X-Men First Class
X-Men First Class opened on June 3rd and I loved it.  True blue comic geeks may have issues with continuity or what mutants were included or not included but it was a well written story which cannot be said for the third film or the Wolverine standalone.  Just Check this Clip out, then go see First Class...It's full of Bacon!!!  Magneto should get his own movie just hunting down Nazi's, sort of the mutant version of Munich.

June 10

Super 8
Super 8 reminds me of a classic Spielberg film such as ET or Close Encounters just ramped up by Abrams.  Hearing good things and can not wait to see it.

June 17

Green Lantern

Superhero space epic...I will let the trailer say the rest.

June 24

Cars 2 comes out this week but my pick for the week goes to ...
Bad Teacher

Looks like it could a great comedy. This movie certainly seems to have come out of left field.

That is it for my June Picks...See you later this month for July.

Things That......Week Two

No cool shit came in the mail this week but that does not mean the week was a total loss.
This week the first pictures of Bane from the Dark Knight Rises hit the interwebs via a viral campagin using the Twitter hashtag #thefirerises.

Tom Hardy IS Bane!

Then tonight 5/22/2011word is that if you email thefirerises@hotmail.co.uk you will get sent the following from Selina Kyle, the pic's name is "friendorfoe.jpg"
Could this be the first photo of Anne Hathaway as Cat Woman?

So all you Batman fan's keep checking http://www.thedarkknightrises.com/ and Twitter #thefirerises to keep tabs on the progress of the final installment of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy!

Also This week a new Green Lantern Trailer hit and it is amazing.  In a a two year span 2011/2012 that could very well be dominated br Marvel with Thor, Captain America, X-Men First Class, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Avengers Green Lantern, the upcoming Dark Knight Rises and Zack Snyder's Superman: The Man of Steel may very well give them a huge run for the money!

Check Out The Green Lantern.

Speaking of The Amazing Spider-Man which reboots the web crawlers story back  to high school, check out this first theatrical poster for the film.

POSTER FAIL!!!!!!

Well I hope you all have a good week!!!!

Things That......Week One

So we are getting near a year on the blog and in recent months it has slowed down since others cant seem to understand its a fun outlet and in times of great stress a coping mechanism for me...assholes. Then I was given the chance to do my weekly DVD and Blu-ray columns on a great local website MODMOBILIAN.COM I slowed down putting that sort of stuff here too.  The blog did let me blow off steam and will in the future.

However in the mean time I figured I would give a new weekly update a shot...Things That......

This weeks is Week One and is Things I got this week!!!!!

Things That I Got In The Mail This Week.....

Drunk Negativity Summer Movie Preview May 2011

As May quickly approaches summer blockbuster season does as well. These are movies that are to just entertain, not stimulate the mind, cure some disease, deal with crazy ballerinas with lesbian tendencies or teach an English aristocrat how to speak without a stammer. No these movies for the most part are about blowing shit up in the most entertaining of ways. These movies will not be up for awards related to achievements in acting, or directing but some will for visual effects, costume, sound design and maybe if lucky best fight or best kiss from the MTV Movie Awards (does it piss anyone else off that they still call it MTV Music Television?)***With a few exceptions some indie releases will be featured ***

So far this year tent pole big budget things go boom movies have not done so well. See Sucker Punch…No really go see it is a great action movie starring beautiful women with a kicking soundtrack and visuals that will blow your mind. The public didn’t embrace it, for such bullshit reasons. I have heard some say the story was lacking, or since it wasn’t based on a comic or graphic novel as the elitist geeks like to call them now days they skipped it. All I can say is the story did its job and moved things right along from badass action scene to the next. Personally I feel the flick surfed from poor marketing and I certainly hope it gains the cult following that I believe it will. Seek it out, see it in Imax even if it is a bastardized certified only and not true Imax. The action and sound track alone will make it worth the coin.

Okay off my Sucker Punch soap box and on to summer blockbusters. Since there are so many movies coming out between now and September I will do a monthly post with my top picks to see (my opinion of course) as well as the movies that scrape the bottom of the barrel and should be avoided (again my opinion. Each month will have its own unique grade scale as to how I would grade the movie. Keep in mind this is all based on what I have seen thus far in trailers and personal opinion.
So here we go these are my picks and passes for May 2011. This month’s scale is Crazy Busey’s. One Crazy Busey’s being the lowest rating four being the highest.

May 6th

Thor

Thor is perhaps the manliest and at the same time the gayest of Marvel Superhero’s but after two years of waiting and being directed by a Shakespearean actor Kenneth Branagh how can I not geek out over this.

Thor the god of thunder gets 4 out of 4 Crazy Busey’s

The Beaver

No not Leave It to Beaver, or a poorly titled sequel to The Animal but a move about a man and his Beaver puppet which stars an Oscar winner for Best Director Mel Gibson and in turn is directed by an Oscar winner for best actress Jodie Foster. Crazy Huh….See what I did there.

The Beaver gets 1 out of 4 Crazy Busey’s

Super

One I really have to recommend just from early looks would be Super. A more mature and some say realistic view on what a real life superhero would be like starring Rainn Wilson from The Office and Ellen Page.

Super gets 4 out of 4 Crazy Busey’s and opens at The Crescent Theater in Downtown Mobile on 5/6/2011 and runs until 5/12/2011

May 13th(Friday)

Bridesmaids

The Hangover for women who play Bunco and enjoy having mani/pedi parties being served hand and foot by the china-men’s concubine from the store next to the Americanized Chinese takeout place in the strip mall.

Bridesmaids gets 1 out of 4 Crazy Busey’s

Priest

Another comic book action film which I am sure will be second fiddle to the dreamy Thor which will hit week two of release by the time Priest comes out. Honestly do not know too much about this one but some of the visual effects from the trailer look half assed. Sure hope they improve it before release time.

Priest gets 1 out of 4 Crazy Busey’s

Hescher *** here is one of those Indie exceptions***

An interesting looking independent film with the Cobra Commander Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the Black Swan herself Natalie Portman. Looks entertaining and though provoking and looks like some minor explosions entail. Hescher opens in NY/LA.

Hescher gets 2 out of 4 Crazy Busey’s

May 20th

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates, Mermaids, Johnny Depp, Ian McShane, Penelope Cruz dressed in pirate garb. Winning!! This fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in my opinion will knock Thor from number 1 down to number 2!

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides gets 4 out of 4 Crazy Busey’s

May 27th

The Hangover Part II

Not sure how this sequel will perform but odds are fans of the original will push this up to number 1 if word of mouth is good over the opening weekend.

The Hangover Part II gets 4 out of 4 Crazy Busey’s

Kung Fu Panda 2

Did this really call for a sequel? Whatever happened to direct to video for this kind of stuff. A fat fucking panda bear doing kung fu. All the kids will love it and the parents forced to sit through it rather than seeing The Hangover Part II will loathe their children all the way home.

Kung Fu Panda 2 gets 1 out of 4 Crazy Busey’s

The Tree Of Life *** here is one of those Indie exceptions***

Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and nope it’s not a movie about rescuing the poor and hungry masses of a flooded city. It’s described as a man’s search for the meaning of life. Didn’t Monty Python already do that shit? The film does look interesting and Terrence Malick is known for his out there stuff.

The Tree Of Life gets 2 out of 4 Crazy Busey’s

Let me know what you think or are looking forward to this May!

As a special look forward here is a recut trailer for Captain America set to the musical theme from Team America…Fuck Yeah!

Things I Learned At My First Film Scramble

This past Friday I attened my first Film Scramble in Downtown Mobile at the Crescent Theater. Mod Mobilian Dot Com and The Crescent Theater certainly did a great job of organizing the event and for the most part the short films were excellant, some of them technically amazing for being made in ten days time. It was a great time even though I had to venture out into downtown alone to attend, but thats nothing a six pack enjoyed at Hopjacks prior to the screeneing couldn't fix.

If you ever get the chance to attend one of these I urge you to do so, even if you hate the films you may just enjoy the hodge podge crowd and learn a few things while you are there.

So without further ado here are the Things I Learned At My First Film Scramble.

Mobile has some very talanted film makers. The originality shown by some was amazing. I mean triplets out to kill twins, and a shoe box taking advantage of a woman. Down right joyus stuff!!

Middle School kid's with boxes on their heads, not entertaining. No matter how much the parents of said children laugh it up.

No matter where you go there is always a know it all and his yes man friend attempting to finger cuff an asian exchange student. At least there was on my aisle. So I moved and stood in the entry way, my expeince got so much better. This guy really thoight he was great. If I heard him say one more thing about ow great he was potryaing Steve Nodine because he looked great in a suit. Please STFU is all I wanted to say.

At one point out of no where a woman ran down the entrance aisle screaming the following about a male who was involved in some way with one of the films. "NAME REDACTED beats women", "NAME REDACTED sucks cock". WOW huh pretty fun shit to learn.

Someone was also apperanty scared of bodily harm as he seemed to beg to sit in he projection booth. He described what sounded like a bald biker who would be coming by to seek him out. "Obviously I don't want to deal with this in the builiding" he said. Drama everywhere I suppose. I made up a back story in my mind that it was about beasteality and the biker was pissed that this young dude had fucked his Yorkie. Hey it made the time pass in line.

It was a great time even though I was alone and knew no one at least in person. Several facebook and Mod Mobilian Dot Com commrades were also there but I was to chciken shit to say hello. Don't give me to much shit about it, I did make new friends last week. Baby Steps I suppose.

To Learn more about Film Scramble go to FilmScramble.Org or check out the FILM page on Mod Mobilian Dot Com

Here are three of this years entries.  Enjoy.

Something Never Done Before

Typically, and by typically I mean 999 times out of 1000 is social and public situations where i know no one I am hidden behind my thick fatty candy shell and keep to my self. Most often I will go so far as to limit chatter with those around me that I do know as not to pull others around us that we do not know into our conversation. In simple terms I'm shy. I can honestly say I have never made a friend outside of school or workplace interactions. Mind you this is not because I never wanted to it was just I never wanted to insert myself where I may not be welcomed or for that matter wanted.

Me I'm the quiet guy in the corner at his own wedding reception. I am the kid that went to few party's in High School or in my later teen years and when I did I found the one or two people I knew and stuck to them like glue.

Well my friends, that all changed and in the oddest of circumstances. My wife and I traveled many miles from home and made two great new friends of total strangers. Though Small talk and then while contemplating the mental and physical ambiguity of a strange person ahead of us in line we seemed to be similar thinking people. After back and fourth movie references about the person in question whom i thought resembled Buffalo Bill from the Silence of the Lambs and whom one of our new found friends called Boo-Boo-Kitty-Fuck, I knew we had new friends.

Still somewhat uneasy we did not follow to sit next to them in the theater, but low and behold they invited us to join them. After more conversation and the screening they invited us to join them for a drink. It was such a great time and as it turns out we were all parents out on a date night of sorts. It was wonderful to get to go out with my wife, make great new friends and have a great time.

Seems little to most I know, but to me it's another brick removed from my wall and maybe a sign that others can be removed as well and chains broken as well.

All in all we had a great time seeing the screening of Red State, followed by a Q&A with Kevin Smith, Melissa Leo and Stephen Root. The best things however were spending time with my wife and meeting our new friends Sean and Jillian.

Thing's like this just make me geek out!!

January 2011 has already come and gone and before we all know it summer will be here.  For me summer means one thing.....Movies.  Thor, Captain America, Green Lantern, Harry Potter and many more will be hitting the screens for our entertainment.   I certainly can not wait.  Chris Evans being cast as Captain America did cause me to have doubts and some of the early photos from the set didn't put them to rest, but this sure did.    On February 4, 2011 PARAMOUNT / MARVEL released the teaser poster for THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA.  It's a bleak and doleful look on Cap's face with dirt and debris exploding behind him all the while holding his iconic battle tested shield.

One bad ass poster in my opinion.

facebook.com/johnandjanedoe

By principal alone I turn down any facebook friend request where the account name is johnandjanedoe.  I mean what is up with that bull.  Can you not have your own identity in life?  Is someone in your relationship so wrapped up that they will not allow the other to have their own facebook identity?  I have no problem with hiusband knowing wifes password, and wife knowing husbands but going so far as to have a shared account is just ridiculous to me.

Facebook is a great way to keep up but it also has the ability to keep people further apart and take advantage of friendships that were once very real and are now just taking place via status updates and txt messages.  Lurkers and hose that post only in need also get no love from this guy, I mean what’s the point…and I’m the one seeking attention.  Facebooker’s microblog away, yep facebook…It’s just a blog too, haters!

Birthday Weekend in Review

I again want to than all those who took the time to send me a happy birthday message.  I know facebook suggest it but I am sure most were from the heart.  You all helped make this a fine birthday that will only be topped by next years or at least I hope that is the case.  Is that not how it should work, each year better than the last?   This year for my birthday weekend I had the chance to spend time with my family, took our kids to Burger Master for the first time (Bailey said the have the best grilled cheese ever) it was also Heather's first visit.  Stayed up late, watched movies with my wife.  We then ended my weekend with my favorite Mexican meal prepared by my wife and sister.

Also if you missed it I am now a contributor to a great website focusing on the Mobile area.  http://modmobilian.com/   you can catch my first post here http://modmobilian.com/2011/01/07/drunk-negativity-dvd-releases-for-the-week-of-january-11-2011/ .  Another fine birthday gift.

Feeling older for the first time!!

With the arrival of my thirty-fourth birthday I suddenly realize what I had gradually been feeling for the last year or two.  I am getting older.  Perhaps not elderly yet as some have told me thirty-four is the new twenty-four but somehow I just don’t feel like that’s the case for me.  Earlier this week as bellied up to a bar in LoDa with friends I realized just how much older than 24 I am.  Enjoying the beer and conversation we overheard the bartender comment that the young woman she was carding was born in 1989 and was legal to drink.  Holy shit, 1989 can buy alcohol?  Then an even harder truth; a young man or, woman born in 1990 turns twenty-one this year and can drink all the booze they want!

My favorite movies of 2010

To mark the end of one year and the beginning of the next its time for the obligatory movies I liked list...So in no particular order here we go..

Cop Out...foul mouthed Kevin Smith Directed(but not written which is a first) Buddy cop film. Great Fun

Hot Tub Time Machine...Another adult oriented comedy.  Great fun flick to take your mind away.

Kick-Ass.....One of my favorites of the year

Iron Man 2....I am Iron Man!!!!

The Lovely Bones...Another great Peter Jackson film.  Heavenly Creatures is much better though

Shutter Island....Seems that Leo can only do films that make you think lately.  This movie took more than one viewing to really enjoy

The Losers...Underrated in my opinion and possibly over shadowed by the A Team.  A great action Flick

Inception...a great thrill ride...Definitely a must see of the year.

The Other Guys...Another great comedy.  WIll Ferrell and Marky Mark as desk jockey cops.  Excellent.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World...great fun movie.  A Child of the video game generation will love it.
